To the Editor:
George Steiner's "Borders and the Modern Mind" tells as much about
the modern mind as about frontiers as "the heraldric image of our
century". Apparently he didn't notice that last fall, in contrast to even
20 years ago, he travelled from England, where he lives, to Italy, where
he gave his paper, without being asked to show a passport. One of the
endearing traits of outstanding intellectuals is their independence - even
of their own experience.
Perhaps we Americans should strive to join the U.S. to
the Common Market's area within which passports and visas aren't
required.
